MYC – Moulding Young Composers!
All student compositions have been mailed to Music For Young Children’s head office in Kanata. In one short week a panel of MYC teachers will review thousands and thousands of original compositions written by children from all over the world.
This year my students began their composing journey with a place. Some children chose a place they would like to visit like Disney world or the arctic. Other children chose places that they visit every day, like school or Grandma’s house. The chosen place became the inspiration for creative use of the music reading and writing skills they have been learning in MYC classes.
Each year it amazes me how the children can always come up with something interesting and new. It is also rewarding to see the pride in my students’ faces when they perform their very own works of art.
This year we were extra excited to compose after a workshop day with Canadian composer Ty Seidenberg. Mr. Seidendberg inspired the children to work outside of the box, to “play” with their music and to use their music to convey a message.
In recent weeks – though our focus on composition is over for this year – children have been bringing original work to the studio to share with me and with their classes. Sometimes the children, as young as four, have even drawn their own staff. Perhaps in Zurich, Ontario we’ll have a new crop of Canadian composers on our hands…one can only hope!

Ty has written a wonderful series of contemporary pieces (Ty Solos) that my intermediate and advanced students are enjoying. Read more about Ty Seidenberg. http://www.tysolos.com/?p=bio
